Being an intern means:
You always get
FREE lunch when there're things like team lunch or you dont have to pay for your coffee/bubble milk tea during tea time.
Why? Because,
usually, interns earn like peanuts.
So today, to welcome a new permanent staff to my team, we have welcome lunch at this nice (and yummy) chinese restaurant at Telol Ayer street. And again, my team members insist that I dont have to pay because I AM AN INTERN and the newjoiner have to pay for my share instead XD Haha and after lunch when the newjoiner and I went to buy bubble tea, he insisted on paying for me again.
Despite the benefit of getting free lunch/tea/coffee/bubble milk tea/dessert, I actually feel quite bad everytime my team members insist on paying for me, especially when they say this:
"Aiyah never mind lah! I know interns dont get paid much! You dont need to pay lah! " Yeah so after like 6 weeks of working at the BANK, there're still times like that:
"Aiyah never mind I treat you, as a welcome treat!"
I hope they never find out how much I am paid. Not that I'm boosting about my pay, but I just need to lighten my guilts here by making some confession. Heh.
Honestly, I was expecting a very tense and cold environment before I started my internship and thought that I'd be working with a bunch of stern and demanding people. But thank god it didnt turn out the way at all!
My team members are actually a great bunch of caring people to work with. Despite the office being quiet at times cause everyone is swamped with never ending workload, people in the BANK are generally helpful and friendly and open. There are not many places that let you arrange informal meetings with directors/managing directors and talk about anything you want afterall. I love the fact that I dont have to do any
sai kang like photocopying stuff/data entry/buy coffee as compared to my other friends who are doing internship at other places. Instead, I'm given the chance to do the daily works and gain greater exposure to the operations of the BANK.
I love my cute team members who are always asking whether they're giving me too much work to do everytime they ask for my help. Haha sometimes they treat me so well that I feel so protected. Typical conversation like this always happen when they assign me stuff to do:
Hey are you free now? Could you help me to do blah blah blah blah blah... Oh wait, am I giving you too many things to do? Aiyah I think you do X can already lah, I can deal with A,B,C,D and E myself.(= And I have to assure them that I'm more than willing to help for millions time before they handover the work to me. Oh and there're H and P who constantly chase me home! Haha normally at around 6.30, P will bchat (the Bank's version of msn) me and ask:
not goin home yet? If I'm still in the office like 15 or 20 minutes later, he will tell me this:
Things that you're doing not not very very urgent, just go home first, they could be done tomorrow.Haha and the classic is here, if I am still around at 7 to 7.30, H will just directly bchat me this:
GO HOME!!!! Haha yes she's so cute that she actully bold the words and add lotsa !!!!!!! to emphasize that she wants me to get out from the office. Oh not forgetting the Boss who will drop by my desk occasionally when he's not bugged down by the calls from London and NY and hints that I should go home unless I really like staying in the office, or chases me out to have lunch if I still havent gone for it by 12.30.
As much as I cant wait for the internship to end, I actually feel quite sad to leave this bunch of nice people. I realise that I havent written much about my work, will probably post more if I get the time to do soon.
This is probably the longest post that I've written since I started to blog again. Pardon for this sudden verbal diarrhea. If you're still reading, I must say that you're really my number one fan! (= Love you!
Till then see ya!
